Since moving last December, I've been 🎧 intently to the honkers on Flannigan Lake, a few hundred yards away from the house. Where I hunt, we kill quite a few.
So I'm thinking about getting some instruction for goose calling. Willing to buy a couple new calls. If need be.
I'd appreciate any advice on calls. The yelping and two-note excited vocal calling seems like the "talk" I hear and I want to mimic. The "moans" don't as important this time of year...

Well Mac
I don’t goose call…….don’t want to learn since it seems to be bassakwards to duck calling but the guys I hunt with do and I just shoot when they call the shot
The goose callers I know say Tim Grounds short reed with broke in guts is the bomb……….but pricey
Sean Mann has always produced good goose calls. Eastern Shoreman
Bill Saunders Traffic is also one that seems to be quite popular
Couple of real old timers swear by their Faulk or Olt wooden calls
Chances are the locals where you are at probably favor a particular call and would recommend what they use.
Good luck

Thanks Wu. I've not spent anything on calls for twenty years I might be in the market.

Mac, I have Some Olt A-50's with the "Idiot Ends" I'd sell. One of these might fit you to a T!

I just use a Big River goose flute and have killed plenty of honkers. Simple to blow and never needs adjusting. Less than $35 too. Granted most of the guys I hunt with use the short reeds and the mix of my call and theirs is glorious cacophony of goose sounds. We can make enough ruckus to bring in any goose that is looking for a place to land. So, if they don’t come in, we just declare they weren’t lookin’…

So, it seems that the flute comes with a goose/ human thesaurus that enables you folks to communicate with them with words like " cacophony " and " ruckus "? Fascinating !!! My avian dictionary must be quite outdated.

There are a plethora of words you can use to speak to the goose, but they mostly just seem to like the honk...
